The first time I ever got published — and got paid for it — was Christmas Day, 1990. I had written a humorous essay about my failure as a Christmas card sender, buying an annual box of cards and winding up with a stack of boxes, signed but rarely sent. I mailed the piece on a lark to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, not expecting to see it in the paper.
